PROJECT BACKGROUND

Mental health is our emotional, physiological and social wellbeing. It affects how we think, feel, and act. Staying in positive mental health allows people to: (1) realise their full potential, (2) cope with the pressure of life; (3) work productively; (4) have positive relationships and (5) make good choices. We have occupational First Aid in the workplace but no Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) even though it is said that 1 in 4 of us will experience a mental health issue at some point in our life. MHFA is the help offered to a person who is developing a mental health problem or who is experiencing a mental health crisis, until appropriate professional treatment is received or until the crisis resolves. It follows the model that has been successful with conventional first aid. The workplace offers many advantages for promoting mental health including access to target groups who are otherwise difficult to access, established communications networks and cohesive workgroups. The cumulative effect of increased working hours is having an important effect on the lifestyle of a huge number of people, which is likely to prove damaging to their mental well-being. Investing in mental health initiatives for leaders and employees of an organization can help in several ways: (1) reduce stigma and create a positive workplace; (2) focus on early intervention/prevention; (3) treat issues to reduce impact; (4) improve productivity and engagement; (5) reduce costs and risk. The “BeWELL” project results will enable SME’s all over Europe to implement these important mental health initiatives, and incorporate them into how they do business, without financial strain.

THE “BeWELL” PROJECT MAIN AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

  • to increase awareness among employers of the personal and economic cost of Mental Illness, and the benefits, personal and economic, of addressing this issue
  • to provide employers with a cost effective solution to address the issue of mental health in the workplace and comply with their regulatory duty of care
  • eliminate stigma and address discrimination in the workplace by having MHFA form a fundamental part of H&S management systems in every workplace in Europe
  • promote more inclusive workplace by helping people to help each other
  • to tackle the issue at EU Policy level to achieve this goal of Occupational MHFA being the recommended best practice solution.

INTELLECTUAL OUTPUTS

IO1 – Online platform with Interactive Mental Health First Aid training will be a core component of the occupational Mental Health First Aid Kit. The aim is to create an online space for people to find support tools and participate with co-workers in activities that promote wellbeing. The website will be tackling the issue of positive mental health in the workplace head-on, and it will be delivered in a way to encourage through education how to positively start a conversation around mental health. The platform will also be used to publish a series of training content and educational videos that will be developed based on the learned and innovation applied during the project. The videos are specifically directed towards employees (and the wider public) to inform, educate and reinforce on the key topics covered in the employee handbook. The video series will work in parallel to the handbook, and be used by employers implementing MHFA as online training for staff.

IO2 – A handbook for Employers on Mental Health First Aid Implementation will be developed specifically for managers of the workplace on how to properly implement a Mental Health First Aid programme into the workplace, and how it can be integrated seamlessly with existing management systems. It is our challenge to develop a management system for MHFA that can be easily integrated with these existing workplace systems and procedures. The handbook will be used as part of the toolkit to introduce MHFA to workplaces. It will accompany the website, the video series, and the employee handbook and it will also contain forms, templates and worksheets required for implementation.

IO3 – A handbook for Employees on Mental Health First Aid will include guidelines that constitute best practice in MHFA strategies through the workplace specifically tailored to Occupational Health & Safety Management System (OH&S systems). The handbook will be used as part of the toolkit to introduce MHFA to workplaces. It will accompany the website, the video series, and the employee handbook and it will also contain forms, templates and worksheets required for implementation. Awareness is the key and ensuring that all support materials are clear, factual and do not stigmatize anyone at all. Creating simple, pragmatic support materials using language that keeps mental Health in the arena Health & Safety at work. This handbook is specifically targeted to the employees who will be equipped with life skills that will sustain their personal and professional development. Specifically the handbook will serve as a sustainable tool towards their personal and professional development as it will connect them with the appropriate resources, foster their self-esteem, and help them acquire empathy, enhance their work performance and ultimately increase their ability to manage mental health issues.

OZADJE PROJEKTA

Duševno zdravje predstavlja naše čustveno, fiziološko in socialno počutje.

THE “BeWELL” PROJECT MAIN AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
